Bornean orangutans tend to be more solitary and sexually dimorphic than Sumatran orangutans and play a crucial role as seed dispersers in tropical forest systems.

Males develop large cheek pads, known as flanges, and a distinctive throat sac that amplifies long calls used for communication across dense forest. Behavior and social structure

Orangutans are primarily solitary, with adults coming together mainly for mating. These nests provide insulation and protection and are used only for a single night in most cases.

Communication and vocalizations

Orangutans communicate using a wide range of vocalizations, from long calls used by males to advertise presence and deter rivals to softer grunts and kiss sounds associated with mother-offspring interactions. Visual signals such as facial displays and hand gestures supplement vocal communication, particularly during social interactions. Acoustic communication plays a key role in spacing individuals in lowland forest environments where visibility can be limited.

Diet and foraging ecology

Orangutans are predominantly frugivorous, with fruit making up a large proportion of their diet when available. They also consume leaves, bark, flowers, insects, and occasionally soil, which may provide minerals or aid digestion. Their slow, selective foraging style allows them to exploit a wide variety of food sources while minimizing energy expenditure. Tool use, observed in some populations, includes using sticks to extract insects or honey and modifying leaves for drinking water.
